What is pre-implantation genetic testing (PGT)?
PGT is a unique fertility service available to patients who have an inherited genetic defect. This is due to an increased risk of having a child with a specific genetic condition that could cause serious health risks.
Our clinical team are leaders in the field and have been offering pre-implantation genetic diagnosis and testing service at Guy’s Hospital since 1997. We are the largest PGT centre in the UK and one of the most successful in Europe, performing more than 60% of the PGT cycles in the country.
As of 2018, we have had over 1,000 babies born following successful PGT and currently test for more than 300 genetic disorders including: cystic fibrosis, sickle cell disease, and Huntington disease.
How does PGT work?
Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ART) normally offered to patients with fertility problems such as IVF or ICSI are used to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. The aim is to obtain and fertilise a number of eggs.
The resulting embryos are allowed to develop from three to five days before a single cell is removed from each embryo to test if your genetic condition affects that embryo.
Up to two unaffected embryos are then transferred into the uterus. If successful, the pregnancy should be unaffected.
The process of PGT does not change the genes of the embryos. The team’s strategy helps eliminate the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome and multiple pregnancy – two of the biggest causes of patient illnesses associated with PGD.
Fertility packages and prices
Fertility packages and the subsequent costs are tailored to each individual. All prices are reviewed regularly. Quotes are valid for a period of 90 days post offer – treatment must be paid in full and commenced in this timeframe.
All new patients will require an initial consultation where your treatment plan can be discussed. All fertility packages exclude medication and cryopreservation of surplus eggs, embryos or sperm.
With our personalised care option, you get to choose from our four world-renowned specialists.
Your fertility journey will be consultant-led throughout. You will benefit from continuity of care, direct access to your chosen consultant and complete flexibility to plan your appointments to suit your schedule.
Your tailored, costed treatment plan will be created with our specialist consultants and our teams will be able to answer any questions you might have in relation to payment or price.
With our self-funded care option, your journey will be led by our team of highly qualified and experienced nurses supported by consultants or senior doctors.
This option may be more affordable but still delivers excellent levels of care. We intend that all self-funded patients are seen within four to six weeks.
Your tailored, costed treatment plan will be created in consultation with our team who will be able to answer any questions you might have in relation to payment or price.
