Clinical expertise

Dr David O’Regan is internationally recognised for his expertise in insomnia, parasomnias, as well as the assessment and management of sleep disorders that coexist with neurodevelopmental and psychiatric conditions.

He consults with patients (aged 18 and over) with:

Sleep disorders, including:

  • insomnia
  • parasomnias (e.g. sleepwalking and nightmares)
  • hypersomnia (e.g. narcolepsy)
  • circadian rhythm sleep disorders (e.g. jet lag, shift work and delayed sleep-wake phase disorders)

Sleep problems in the context of:

  • multiple sleep disorders (e.g. obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and insomnia)
  • intellectual disabilities
  • neurodevelopmental disorders
  • psychiatric disorders

He offers treatments such as:

  • advanced sleep pharmacotherapy
  • advanced behavioural sleep therapies (including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for insomnia and parasomnias)
  • home and inpatient sleep investigations
  • specialist brain imaging, blood and cerebrospinal fluid tests
  • multi-disciplinary sleep psychiatry and sleep neurology assessments
  • advice and guidance for other healthcare professionals


Biography

Dr David O’Regan is a specialist in sleep medicine and psychiatry.

Following a first-class honours BSc in Physiology at University College Cork (Ireland) and a Wellcome Trust PhD in neuroendocrinology at the University of Edinburgh, he read medicine at the University of Cambridge.

He subsequently undertook specialist training in sleep medicine at University College London Hospitals.


Research

Dr David O’Regan maintains an active research interest, publishing widely in sleep medicine. He is frequently invited to teach and lecture internationally, and is highly sought as a key opinion leader.

He developed the first group-based talking therapy for NREM parasomnias, such as sleepwalking. He is currently the principal investigator in the UK for international sleep medicine studies.

He is a past President of the Sleep Medicine Section at the Royal Society of Medicine.

As a recognised authority in insomnia, he is a panel member on several international programmes, including Redefining Education on Sleep Therapy.

Teaching

He holds an Honorary Senior Lectureship at King’s College London, and a visiting lectureship at University College London.
